Red Light Works

We all know that we need to sleep more.  We all know that millions of people have problems with getting the recommended 7 to 9 hours of sleep and not getting sleep can be very serious.  We have heard that Blue light is not good for you at night because it effects your ability to relax and fall asleep but what about red light? Studies conducted in China shows that red light increases melatonin levels in your body and helps you fall asleep.

Restful Sleep

Why is it so important to sleep?   Besides feeling better after a good night’s sleep, here are some eye opening facts about it.  Studies show that 17 hours of sustained wakefulness in adults leads to a decrease in performance equal to a blood alcohol-level of 0.05%.  Almost the legal level of drunk driving in this country.  In United States it is 0.08%.   The less sleep you get, the more mistakes and accidents you make.  Studies have shown that 10–15% of fatal motor-vehicle crashes are due to sleepiness or driver fatigue.  By next year the number of people killed in motor-vehicle crashes is expected to reach 2.3 million deaths worldwide.

That is double from years past.  The number associated to fatigue or sleepiness is between 230,000 and 345,000.  That is just on the roads but if you are one that got in an accident and now you go to the hospital to have a doctor try to save your life you hope that she or he has received their 7 to 9 hours of sleep the night before so they can be fresh and alert in doing their job of saving your life.  But it has been estimated that 100,000 deaths happen each year in US hospitals due to medical errors.  Doctors and medical staff not getting their required sleep have shows to contribute to that number.

RED vs BLUE

Let’s shine a light on the issue of sleep!  You have heard to keep your room dark, to kick your electronics out of your bedroom, to put your phone in the next room, all for a good nights sleep but what does my phone have to do with me getting a good  7 to 9 hours of sleep.   NASA sponsored researchers to study how light affects the human body.  Kennedy engineer Daniel Shultz says “what they are finding was that different colors of light help people stay awake and to go to sleep” .

George Brainard, a professor of neurology at the Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, found that blue light reduces your melatonin production.  For those of you that do not know melatonin is the hormone that your body produces naturally to help you fall asleep .  Melatonin is responsible to help balance your own natural body clock or your body’s circadian rhythm.   More melatonin helps you fall asleep while less melatonin you are more awake.  They also found that the human eye has sensitive areas to light.   In the International Space Station astronauts see many sunrises and sunsets in a 24 hour period therefore their own natural body clock is out of balance.  Here on Earth, our own circadian rhythms acclimate to the sun rising and setting.  When the astronauts see the sun come and go many times in that 24 hours it effects their ability to sleep.  So for NASA, light could help the astronauts avoid not getting the sleep they need.  Robert Soler, who is a lighting expert working with NASA, says “These lights trigger a photoreceptor to send messages to the area of the brain where circadian rhythms are regulated.  When you do this, the body’s clock believes it is a certain time of the day.”

More BLUE light = less SLEEP

What does blue light and me taking my phone to bed have to do with me not falling asleep? A lot of people have asked this question. Here is the short answer: Blue light from your phone, tablet and laptop computer throws off your body’s natural clock.  All that blue light tells your body it is daytime and turns off the melatonin production in your body.  You need melatonin to fall asleep.  Blue light is needed for daylight hours to boost your mood, reactions times and attention.  A Harvard Medical School newsletter noted last year that “ Blue wavelengths -- which are beneficial during daylight hours because they boost attention, reaction times, and mood -- seem to be the most disruptive at night. And the proliferation of electronics with screens, as well as energy-efficient lighting, is increasing our exposure to blue wavelengths, especially after sundown.
